In previous articles I've crystallized some thoughts about the emerging field of drugs for life extension (including extending quality of life). I've indicated that this has been a graveyard for biotech startups, but that there are indications of life extension from two widely prescribed drugs (Metformin and Rapamycin). It seems that the search for the elixir of life takes many weird and unexpected turns. Parabiosis, an unfamiliar word, involves having two animals share the same blood supply. In the area of aging research, a recent article in the science journal Nature showed that young blood (i.e. joining the bloodstreams of young and old mice together) has unknown factors that bring youth to old tissues.
