At this point, the variety of reports and reputation of the sources leave little doubt that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is embarked on an electric vehicle (EV) development program. But what is the magnitude of the opportunity for Apple, and what is the likely path forward to capture that opportunity? In this article I begin to answer these questions, refining my answers in future articles. Gene Munster is reported to have estimated that an Apple electric vehicle is at least 5 years away. Given the long development cycles that are prevalent in the automobile industry, this seems about right.
